mar Egeo y el mar J\u00f3nico, un raro mam\u00edfero marino lucha por sobrevivir: la foca monje del Mediterr\u00e1neo (<i>Monachus monachus<\/i>). Con menos de 1000 ejemplares, es uno de los mam\u00edferos marinos m\u00e1s amenazados del planeta \u2014 y m\u00e1s de la mitad habita en Grecia.<br \/>Estas t\u00edmidas focas dependen de cuevas marinas tranquilas para descansar, reproducirse y criar a sus cr\u00edas. proviene del griego monachos, que significa \u201cmonje\u201d, en alusi\u00f3n a los pliegues de piel en su cuello que parecen una capucha. Descrita por primera vez en 1779, esta especie ha recorrido el Mediterr\u00e1neo durante milenios.<br \/>Los adultos miden hasta 2,8 metros y pesan unos 300 kg. Con cuerpo hidrodin\u00e1mico, cazan pulpos, calamares y peces hasta 200 metros de profundidad, aguantando la respiraci\u00f3n m\u00e1s de 10 minutos. A pesar de su habilidad, son extremadamente vulnerables \u2014 especialmente al criar. Estos lugares les ofrecen refugio \u2014 siempre que no haya alteraciones humanas.<br \/>Muchas cuevas siguen activas hoy en d\u00eda, y deben mantenerse aisladas, sin ruido, tr\u00e1fico mar\u00edtimo ni luces.
