With the sailing season resuming, many of you will come across marine animals on your way, especially cetaceans. Beautiful creatures that sometimes have not changed a bit for several thousand years and who make you happy when you cross their path!<\/p>

Observing and interacting with them requires some knowledge and that is why we are starting this new \u2018\u2019volet\u2019\u2019 on our blog dedicated to understanding and protecting marine flora and fauna.<\/p>

Throughout the season we will present one cetacean per article, to learn more about these animals and how to observe them. These sheets are proposed by Serge Briez founder of the \u2018\u2019Les Peuples de la Mer\u2019\u2019 (translated in english : Peoples of the Sea), a citizen NGO which goal is the protection through knowledge of a Mediterranean maritime area: the Gulf of Lion.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Serge Briez is a photographer, naturalist and navigator passionate about marine flora and fauna. For years, he has observed and studied the marine species inhabiting the waters of the Gulf of Lion. These observations aim to raise awareness of a world that is often little known to the general public, and to educate younger generations to realize the importance of major species like cetaceans in our coastal waters.<\/p>\n

His immersive exhibition of large-format photos\u00a0WILD LEUCATE SAUVAGE<\/a>\u00a0in Port Leucate reflects his work of observation and conservation over several years and is an open door to a neighboring and yet little-known marine world. Les Peuples de la Mer : Observe, study and educate to better understand and protect<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

During the production and presentation of the WILD LEUCATE SAUVAGE exhibition featuring 15 years of photographs over 750 km2 of sea, land and ponds, Serge understood that this region and the animal species that live there although benefiting from protection , are poorly known and their rights are often non-existent or poorly recognized.<\/p>\n

This is why he founded Les Peuples de la Mer, an NGO based in Port Leucate whose mission is to help fill this void by constituting a vast experiment through an increased and regular presence in the natural spaces of Leucate. Establish contacts with all wild species, make observations, bring back knowledge, images, and disseminate them to improve our vision and awareness of the Peoples of the Sea.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In its means of action, the NGO includes scientific, educational, legal, artistic aspects. Its purpose is to make the public and professionals and users of the sea aware of the current and future challenges of preserving natural balances with \u201cthe Peoples of the Sea\u201d, and to work for the preservation of marine life in a pacifist, apolitical, positive and hopeful approach.
Two major projects are currently being undertaken by the NGO, most of which are in the Port Leucate conservation and observation area.<\/p>\n

Observing is learning and many associations offer eco-volunteers naturalistic observation embarkations where you will learn a lot about these MASTERS of the Seas, the Cetaceans.<\/p>\n
