1. Overview of La Maddalena National Park

La Maddalena Archipelago Boating Regulations: Anchoring Zones, Permits & Sailing Rules

The La Maddalena Archipelago consists of over 60 islands and islets, forming one of Italy’s most important marine protected areas. Recognized for its rich biodiversity, the park enforces strict navigation and anchoring rules to protect its sensitive habitats, particularly the Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows.

For a clear visual reference of the zoning and regulations, we recommend checking out the official zoning map.

The park is divided into zones with different levels of environmental protection:

Zone Ma – Integral Protection

  • No access allowed.
  • Navigation, anchoring, mooring, and even transit are strictly prohibited.

Example: Cala di Roto (Spiaggia Rosa, the famous Pink Beach on Budelli Island) falls into this category.

Zone Mb – General Protection
Navigation and anchoring allowed during daytime (8:00 AM to 10:00 PM).

  • Anchoring permitted only on sandy or rocky seabeds to protect Posidonia.
  • Always check seabed type before dropping anchor.

3. Nighttime Anchoring Restrictions (Effective August 2024)

Notice to All Visiting Boaters – La Maddalena Archipelago

Since the end of April, the National Park has permanently lifted the general ban on overnight anchoring under the new 2026 regulations (Ordinance 033/2026). This decision brings an end to the period of legal uncertainty and provides a stable regulatory framework for recreational boaters.

Overnight mooring is now permitted for all, provided the following guidelines are followed:

  • Anchor exclusively on sandy seabeds (never on Posidonia) or use the buoys provided by the Park.
  • Hold a valid navigation permit issued by the Park.
  • Be equipped with a black water treatment system (Retention tank).
  • Remain outside specific exclusion zones or emergency corridors.

Please check official Park or TAR announcements periodically for updates following the final judgment.

4. Anchoring and Mooring Rules

To help preserve the marine ecosystem:

  • Anchor only on sandy or pebble seabeds — never on Posidonia meadows.
  • Mooring buoys are available in designated areas such as Porto Palma, Cala Portese (Caprera), and near Budelli.
  • Passenger vessel priority: Between 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM, some buoys are reserved for passenger transport boats, particularly in peak season.

Always plan your anchoring early to secure a legal and environmentally respectful spot.

5. Navigation and Speed Limits

Compared with the previous regulations, new, stricter speed limits came into force in 2026 (Coastguard Order No. 033/2026). These are listed below:

  • Maximum speed of 7 knots within 500 metres of the coast.
  • Maximum speed of 10 knots at a distance of between 500 and 1,000 metres from the coast (whilst maintaining a cruising speed).
  • Beyond 1,000 metres, please refer to the general guidelines, but remain vigilant regarding passenger vessels.
  • The use and transit of jet skis are strictly prohibited in all waters of the National Park

6. Permits and Entry Fees

Navigating in La Maddalena without a permit is illegal:

  • Entry Permit Required: All vessels must acquire a permit online through the La Maddalena Park website.
  • Fee Structure: Varies according to vessel length. Sailboats benefit from a 40% discount to encourage eco-friendly navigation.
  • Exemptions: Non-motorized vessels like kayaks and paddleboats are exempt from the fee.

Ensure your permit is visible onboard or easily accessible digitally.

7. Prohibited Activities and Fines

To preserve the pristine environment, the following are strictly forbidden:

  • Access to Cala di Roto (Pink Beach) and other Ma zones.
  • Anchoring on Posidonia beds.
  • Waste discharge (including gray and black water) into the sea.
  • Fishing, jet skiing in protected areas, and bringing unauthorized pets to beaches.

Violations can result in fines ranging from €276 to €1,377.
Respecting these rules not only preserves the beauty of the archipelago but also ensures your sailing trip remains stress-free.
