About the Esterel Massif

A Unique Volcanic Massif

Formed over 250 million years ago, the ancient Esterel volcano is now a true geological landmark. The massif consists of red rhyolite, a volcanic rock rich in quartz that has dyed the entire coast a fiery red.

Today, the Esterel massif features spectacular landscapes: peaks, domes, and cliffs shaped by millions of years of erosion. It’s a one-of-a-kind landscape on the French Riviera that’s well worth a visit!

Exceptional Hiking

A massif naturally means hiking opportunities, and Esterel is no exception. With over 100 km of marked trails offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean’s turquoise waters within an exceptional mountain setting, the Esterel Massif has something for every hiking enthusiast. Must-see spots include Mont Vinaigre, Pic de l’Ours, and Cap Roux. In short, there’s something for all tastes and skill levels!

A Protected and Sensitive Area

Much of the massif is classified as a Natura 2000 site, a European designation aimed at protecting remarkable habitats and species. Here you can find many protected animals such as the Bonelli’s eagle, Hermann’s tortoise, and the harmless Montpellier snake.

Posidonia seagrass beds are also protected, so it’s important to be aware of authorized anchoring zones before heading to the Esterel Coast.

In summer, parts of the massif may be closed due to fire risk, and all fires, including cigarettes, are strictly prohibited.

The best anchorages when sailing on the Esterel Coast

Théoule-sur-Mer

Our first anchorage is Théoule-sur-Mer, and it’s sure to impress! Located in the Bay of Napoule, it is sheltered from the northwest to the south by the west. Be careful to avoid seagrass beds when dropping anchor in the sandy and muddy bottoms for optimal holding.

The setting here is breathtaking. The bay is surrounded by lush green hills and striking red rocky cliffs typical of the Esterel Coast. From your boat, you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of Théoule-sur-Mer. Nestled against the Esterel massif, this village charms with its authentic atmosphere, a handful of restaurants and shops, and picturesque beaches, all far from the usual French Riviera crowds!

For an even more magical experience, explore the Lérins Islands, halfway between Théoule-sur-Mer and Cannes. Made up of Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat, the Lérins Islands offer a getaway full of history and natural beauty. Discover the Fort Royal, the Sea Museum, a fortified monastery, and above all, an idyllic setting to explore in complete peace.

Théoule-sur-Mer is the perfect stopover, full of tranquility and authenticity, ideal to start your sailing adventure along the Esterel Coast!

Cap Roux

To continue our timeless journey, let’s head toward Cap Roux. This anchorage is protected from the north to the south by the west, with sandy bottoms offering good holding between 5 and 8 meters deep.

Once anchored, take a moment to soak in the breathtaking scenery around you. The crystal-clear waters blend perfectly with the towering cliffs overlooking the anchorage, creating such an idyllic contrast it feels unreal. At anchor here, time seems to stand still. A serene atmosphere of silence and grandeur envelops this pristine nature. At the top of the cliff, the regional train occasionally passes by, a subtle reminder that time keeps moving nonetheless.

EN - Cap Roux (2)

But don’t just stop at the view from your boat! From the anchorage, hiking trails lead to remarkable summits of Cap Roux, offering 360° panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the bright red Esterel coastline, and the hinterland. Be sure to bring sturdy hiking shoes as the trails can be rocky and slippery, and plenty of water since there’s no potable water on the paths.

In short, Cap Roux has everything to charm you, and now it’s waiting for your visit!

Île des Vieilles

Île des Vieilles is an absolutely exceptional anchorage when sailing along the Esterel Coast. You’ll be protected from north to east by the northwest, but watch out for seagrass and rocky bottoms when dropping anchor.

This anchorage looks like it’s straight out of a dream. Like a painting, the landscapes rise before you, leaving you speechless. All around, red reefs emerge from crystal-clear waters. In the background, the majestic cliffs of the Esterel massif tower over the anchorage. This scene will inspire only one desire: to dive in and stay forever!

EN - Île des Vieilles (2)

Speaking of diving, Île des Vieilles is perfect for snorkeling. The water is so clear that spotting a variety of fish swimming all around you will be easy. And that’s not all. The anchorage also features a natural pool!

Agay East Bay

To continue our sailing adventure along the Esterel Coast, The Octopus now takes you to Agay Bay. There are three anchoring and mooring zones there. We chose the buoy field on the east side, protected from northwest to east by the north. Anchoring is regulated here due to the protection of the seagrass beds, so we recommend using a buoy whenever possible instead of your anchor.

Once settled, enjoy a well-deserved moment of relaxation! The fine sandy beaches and nearby coves are charming and guarantee a moment of rest, all with a stunning view of the Esterel massif!

EN - Rade d'Agay East (2)

If you’re still craving adventure, hike around Rastel d’Agay. Marked trails lead to a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the bay, Saint-Raphaël, the Esterel massif, and on very clear days, even Corsica.

In short, Agay Bay is the ideal stopover whether you want to relax or keep exploring the massif!

L’Île d’Or

Our sailing along the Esterel Coast is nearing its end, and The Octopus chose to finish on a high note! This anchorage is sheltered from the north, south, and southeast, so it’s best to visit only in calm weather. Before dropping anchor, make sure to avoid seagrass and rocks for good holding.

EN - L'île d'Or

L’Île d’Or is simply breathtaking. The anchorage lies beside a small private island inaccessible to the public, topped by a medieval-style tower. Actually, it was built only in the 20th century by a doctor named Auguste Lutaud. The tower is said to have inspired Hergé, the creator of Tintin, for his comic “The Black Island.”

EN - L'île d'Or (2)

The island is part of the Cap Dramont Nature Reserve, and its waters are rich in marine life. It’s a popular spot for scuba diving, with diving centers nearby.
Beyond its history and crystal-clear waters, L’Île d’Or is a living postcard perfectly capturing what sailing the Esterel Coast is all about.
